Financial Controller

Position Summary: Reporting to the President of a business unit, the Controller will be responsible for managing all finance, accounting and reporting activities in Canada. The Controller will be the financial leader and business partner for the President and be involved in facilitating presentations to the board and senior leadership team. Responsible for the monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes. Manages all journal entries, account reconciliations, monthly and quarterly reporting. Prepares financial statements for the Canadian plant, as well as the roll up to our US headquarters. Inventory, cost, and manufacturing accounting subject matter expert. Leads, manages, and develops Finance team.

Primary/Essential Responsibilities:

  • Principal manager of the accounting activities of the Canadian entity; responsible for maintaining appropriate internal control
  • Responsible for the preparation of accurate and timely monthly financial statements, including the P&L, balance sheet, within three working day
  • Prepare actual performance to plan and forecast analysis and commentary
  • Proactively monitors monthly and quarterly financial performance and makes appropriate recommendations to achieve desired profit objectives
  • Leads the control and reporting of the company’s capital expenditures and fixed asset
  • Manage year-end annual independent financial audit by managing due dates, preparing required financial and tax work papers, and working directly with third party audit firm
  • Manage, coordinate, and prepare the annual operating Plan and local departmental budgets.
  • Oversee all monthly, quarterly, and annual cost changes, and understand the impact of material, labor and overhead changes on inventory and the P&L
  • Manage and lead any physical inventory counts, oversee regular inventory cycle count program, as well as investigating, troubleshooting, and reconciling inventory accuracy issues or transaction errors as they arise on the manufacturing floor
  • Responsible for the Financial Analyst, Junior Accountant, Accounts Payable, Receptionist, and Cycle Counter functions
  • Manages, assigns and audits the work of all direct reports; provide semi-annual and annual performance reviews, evaluates performance against job requirements and established annual goals, provides daily coaching and training to develop world class Finance team
  • Works as a business partner with the Operations team, providing relevant financial support to effectively control costs
  • Finance lead on team related projects involving cost control/waste elimination/lean manufacturing principles
  • Involved with strategic corporate initiatives and ad hoc analyses as needed.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance
  • Minimum of 10 plus years of progressive accounting experience, in a high-volume manufacturing environment
  • Minimum 5 plus years in an accounting leadership role
  • Thoroughly understand finance & accounting concepts, with a general understanding of GAAP
  • Strong cost accounting and inventory knowledge and experience
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite, including intermediate to expert Excel skills; experience working with large data sets; able to manipulate and organize effectively and efficiently
  • Knowledge and experience in ERP or MRP business system, with JD Edwards experience preferred
  • Knowledge and experience with consolidation software/tools, with Adaptive Insights experience preferred
  • Strategic thinker, who can translate conceptual issues into tangible goals and tasks
  • Protects organization’s value by keeping information confidential
  • Ability to work independently, including leading a team, with minimal direction/supervision

Preferred Qualifications:

  • CPA preferred—or the equivalent combination of work experience and skill development
  • Solid understanding of Canadian GAAP and currency adjustments
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to interact with all levels of the company
  • Possess strong analytical, critical thinking and judgment skills
  • Self-starter with excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Organized and able to handle multiple on-going responsibilities

  • Light Lifting (occasional 25 lbs or less)
